5 Top Things To Do in Dubai (And a Few I Wish I’d Done)

Dubai is a city with a mix of modern marvels, cultural heritage, and unparalleled luxury. During my recent visit, I discovered some must-see experiences that showcase the best-of-the-best of what Dubai has to offer, along with a few activities I wish I’d had time to explore. Here are five things you should do in Dubai, plus a few more if you have the time.
1. Desert Safari
Picture this: cruising over sand dunes in a vintage Land Rover, just as they did in the 1950s. Our safari adventure took us into the desert to watch a fascinating falconry show, a traditional Bedouin practice that’s been passed down through generations. The evening ended with a lavish dinner under the stars, complete with traditional Emirati cuisine and live entertainment. It was a magical experience that transported us back in time and offered a taste of authentic desert life.
2. Burj Khalifa, Dubai Fountain and Dubai Mall
From the observation decks of the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, take in the panoramic views of Dubai. Afterwards watch a dazzling water show set to music at the Dubai Fountain. Enter the Dubai Mall, one of the largest shopping centres in the world. The mall is worth seeing, complete with a full-size skating rink and indoor amusement park. I have never seen such beautiful public washrooms, anywhere!
3. Marvel at Dubai’s Skyline
One of the best ways to appreciate Dubai’s futuristic architecture, is by just driving around. Start with Sheikh Zayed Road, lined with skyscrapers like the twisted Cayan Tower and the striking Museum of the Future. Don’t miss the sail-shaped Burj Al Arab and the Atlantis Palm, perched on the crescent of Palm Jumeirah.
4. Visit The Old Port Area
For a taste of Dubai’s rich history, visit the Old Port area along Dubai Creek and wander through the Al Fahidi Historical Neighborhood. It’s a serene contrast to Dubai’s modern vibe.
5. Explore the Souks
Dubai’s souks (market) are a sensory delight, with vibrant colors and exotic scents. The Gold Souk is famous for its dazzling jewelry, while the Spice Souk offers a fragrant mix of spices and herbs, including saffron. Don’t forget to haggle—it’s all part of the experience! I purchased two camels that play music and they continue to be a source of great enjoyment for my grandchildren.
Wish I’d Done:
Though my trip was packed with incredible experiences, there were a few things I missed:
Dine at Orfali Bros. Restaurant: Unfortunately, time ran out, but I’ll make it a priority next time!
Take the Hop-On Hop-Off Bus: A convenient way to explore more of the city at my own pace.
Enjoy a Friday Brunch or High Tea: Dubai is famous for its extravagant brunches and high teas, and I regret not experiencing one.
Visit Abu Dhabi: I wish I’d added extra time to drive to Abu Dhabi to visit the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and the cultural landmarks.
Dubai is a city that never ceases to amaze, and no matter how much you see, there’s always something left to discover in a great city with the newest, biggest and best of just about everything.
Whether you’re a first-time visitor, like I was, or a seasoned traveler, these experiences will make your trip unforgettable.
