Chic, Affordable, & Fun – Chogogo Dive & Beach Resort Bonaire

by Susan Campbell

I must admit, when I first spotted the massive, modern new resort on Bonaire’ s Bari Reef last year, I wasn’t sure what to make of it. With massive white circus style tents and big blocks of white apartment style wings surrounded by a manmade beach, it seemed to lack the character and color that makes this island so special. But I decided to give it a try this year, and I was surprisingly impressed.

Though ‘Chogogo’ means ‘flamingo’ in Papiamentu, Bonaire’s native language, this sprawling complex is not awash in the cotton candy-colored hues of the island’s national bird. Though there are pops of pink and the aqua punctuating the structures, they opted to leave the stunning cerulean hues of the surrounding sea to complete an inviting oceanfront scene. I’d also heard they had a “water park”. But it’s more of one small water slide that leads to a long lazy river that winds throughout the entire property. It’s more relaxing than amusement parkish, and it’s beautifully lit up at night. And as far as the big white tents go, once on site, the vibe is classier than carnival style. It emits an almost chic Miami beach club feel, but make no mistake, this spot is quintessentially Dutch.

Accommodations range from oceanfront and garden view simple and deluxe studios, little stand alone apartments, and spacious three-bedroom villas. I was in a third-floor oceanfront deluxe studio, and the view was spectacular. But no-nonsense Dutch efficiency was ever present in the room itself. It was minimalist to the max with few amenities beyond a fire engine red mini fridge with matching toaster and kettle, an induction plate, and a large screen TV. Bathroom amenities consisted of only one bottle of combination shampoo and shower gel all in one, and housekeeping is only available every three days. But to be fair, I believe lack of amenities and extras might be due to a commitment to reduce waste and conserve water and energy from the outset. Bonaire strives to be a very eco-conscious island by design. But they don’t skimp on quality or service in their on-site food and beverage outlets. I thoroughly enjoyed hearty a la carte breakfasts in their alfresco Sunset Restaurant & Bar and their Barí Beach Bar is fun and funky with live music most nights. It’s located right beside their little Scuba Do dive operator right in front of Bari Reef there which is a wonderful place to snorkel. Right offshore in shallow water you’ll encounter plenty of colorful marine life.

But it was dinner at their lovely seaside signature restaurant Biña that was truly above and beyond. The word ‘’biña’’ comes from the local language Papiamentu meaning ‘’wine’’, and their cellar is exceptional and their sommeliers first-rate. I had invited a local couple who founded an important marine life foundation called Blue Defender to join me, and we sampled their 4-course chef’s surprise menu paired with wines. My dinner companions opted for the seafood theme while I went with the meat, and we were totally blown away with the creativity, quality, and taste of every course. Service was also impeccable. I find it a very welcome addition to the island’s burgeoning culinary scene. Overall, I found this new resort in general also a welcome addition to Bonaire’s tourism offerings. Day passes are available to enjoy the beach facilities and lazy river should you want to experience the vibe ahead before committing to a stay.
