Cruising Eastern Canada Waters
An Unforgettable Journey With Holland America
by Olivia Liveng
Cruises have often been stereotyped as a leisurely getaway with buffet tables and late-night card games. However, there’s a dynamic transformation unfolding in the cruising world. As new ships launch and older ones get revamped, the amenities and experiences onboard evolve to reflect contemporary tastes. The essence of adventure and rejuvenation is beckoning travelers of all backgrounds and ages to embark upon the open seas. This new wave of cruising is not just about destinations but also about the journey itself. My husband, Jonathan, and I were among those enticed by the siren call of the waves.
Amid the vast array of available destinations, we plotted our course for an Eastern Canada expedition aboard Holland America’s Zaandam. While the thought of road-tripping was something we discussed briefly, it faded when the allure of the ocean beckoned (and we realized just how complex planning a road trip for some of the more remote destinations we wanted to access!) What cruises offer, especially in today’s age, is an elegant fusion of exploration and luxury – a floating hotel with ever-changing views. And for us, the choice to set sail was clear.
Navigating the Ports with Precision
Crafting the perfect cruise itinerary is an art form. Beyond the onboard activities and entertainment, the selection of ports, the excursions they offer, and the stopover duration can dramatically shape the nature of your adventure. Ports that are easily accessible with rich histories or unique local cultures can turn a good cruise into an unforgettable one. Holland America’s Zaandam, in its wisdom, seemed to have privileged positions at every port. Docking in the heart of cities like picturesque Quebec, with its cobbled streets and European charm, added layers to our adventure.
The iconic Le Château Frontenac became a serene backdrop for our mornings. At the same time, Montreal, with its vibrant arts scene and culinary delights, offered both the convenience and charm of urban life. To think of walking the old town, sampling local cheeses, and then embarking on a ship with hot poutine in hand – it’s a traveler’s dream.
Ensure a Smooth Start with an Early Arrival
Any seasoned traveler will vouch for the unpredictabilities of journeying – flight delays, misplaced luggage, sudden weather changes. Mitigating these uncertainties ensures that you start your journey stress-free. Therefore, we decided to anchor ourselves in Montreal a day before our cruise. The city, with its fusion of old-world charm and modern vibrancy, set the perfect tone for our upcoming journey. Those famed Montreal bagels, our charming attempts at speaking French, and the majestic beauty of the Saint Lawrence River at dusk were only precursors to the wonders ahead.
Travel Light, Travel Right
The essence of any fulfilling travel is not in quantity but in quality. In a world where it’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of must-dos, we chose the path of minimalism. Each port brought myriad possibilities, but instead of cramming our schedule, we let spontaneity guide us. Meandering through the Canadian port cities at our own pace, we found hidden gems in alleyways, had unexpected conversations with locals, and found joy in observing life around us.
The Nightlife on Board
The Zaandam truly comes alive when the sun sets, and the ship’s lights reflect on the tranquil waters. Onboard activities range from theatrical performances and live music to dance parties and themed nights. The blend of international passengers also makes for vibrant and diverse evenings. Some nights, we engaged in deep conversations with fellow travelers, sharing stories and forging connections.
Unravel the Wonders of the Kids Club
For families, ensuring that young ones are entertained is crucial. Holland America’s Kids Club is not just a play area but a hub of creativity and learning. From arts and crafts workshops to storytelling sessions and treasure hunts, the activities are designed to engage and educate.
Relish a Post-Cruise Respite
While the cruise itself is a whirlwind of experiences, allowing the magic to settle is essential. For this reason, we opted to spend a few additional days in Boston. With its blend of colonial history and modern innovation, this historic city was the perfect bookend to our journey. Our chosen accommodation, The Boston Harbor Hotel, proved pivotal to enriching our Boston experience. Ideally located within walking distance of Boston’s signature attractions, it allowed us to explore effortlessly. Moreover, the hotel’s onsite restaurant, Rowes Wharf Sea Grill, became our favorite harborside spot. Here, we indulged in modern culinary twists like the lobster bao while enjoying the lively ambiance of waterfront people-watching.
Setting Sail Once More
Our journey aboard Holland America’s Zaandam was an intoxicating blend of leisure, exploration, and rejuvenation. As the Boston skyline faded and the magnificent Zaandam receded from view, it left an indelible mark on our hearts. In this new era, we realized that cruising is more than a vacation; it’s a voyage of discovery.
To all seasoned and budding adventurers, here’s my message: Dive into the world of cruises. Amidst the gentle sway of the sea and under moonlit skies, your next unforgettable journey awaits. The oceans are vast, and their stories are countless. Set sail, and write your own.
