Article and photography by Michael Morcos

There are winter getaways—and then there are transformative escapes. When the frozen north becomes unbearable and the promise of warm Gulf breezes starts calling your name, Florida answers in grand style. This three-city journey through Tampa, Punta Gorda/Englewood Beach, and Miami delivered culture, cuisine, coastline, and character in equal measure.

From historic cigar factories to botanical sculpture gardens, beachside brunches to Art Deco glamour, this was a Florida “triple play” worth savoring.

Tampa: Culture, Cuisine & Cuban Heritage

Touching down in Tampa and picking up a rental car at the airport marked the official start of our road trip. The moment the warm air hit our faces, we knew we had left winter far behind. Tampa welcomes you with subtropical ease and a relaxed sophistication that sets the tone for the days ahead.

Spacious rooms, nature trails, waterfront dining, and a peaceful ambiance make it an ideal launchpad for exploring the city. It’s polished yet inviting—exactly what you want after a day of travel.

Lunch at Oak & Ola at Armature Works

Armature Works is Tampa’s buzzing food and cultural hub, and Oak & Ola delivered a vibrant Mediterranean-inspired lunch. Fresh flavors, artful presentation, and an energetic setting made this a memorable first meal in Florida. The waterfront views added to the ambiance.

The Tampa Museum of Art is compact yet compelling, with a thoughtful collection that spans antiquities and contemporary works. Its modern architecture contrasts beautifully with the historic surroundings. Whether you’re an art enthusiast or a casual visitor, there’s plenty here to capture your attention.

Dinner at Oystercatchers

Back at the Grand Hyatt, Oystercatchers delivered a spectacular waterfront dining experience. As the sun set over Tampa Bay, we indulged in fresh seafood prepared with precision and creativity. The atmosphere—elegant but unpretentious—made for a perfect first evening.

The Highlight: J.C. Newman Cigar Factory

Tampa’s cigar legacy is legendary, and touring the J.C. Newman Cigar Factory was the undisputed highlight of our time in the city. Stepping inside felt like traveling back in time. The scent of tobacco, the craftsmanship of hand-rolled cigars, and the family-owned history dating back over a century made for a fascinating and authentic experience. It was immersive, educational, and deeply rooted in Tampa’s cultural DNA.

Sicilian Lunch at Casa Santo Stefano

Located in historic Ybor City, Casa Santo Stefano offered a fantastic Sicilian feast. From house-made pasta to perfectly balanced sauces, every bite felt like a culinary journey to southern Italy. The warm hospitality matched the food—authentic and heartfelt.

Punta Gorda & Englewood Beach, Laid-Back Gulf Luxury

Leaving Tampa behind, we drove south toward Punta Gorda and Englewood Beach. The scenery shifted to open roads, palm trees, and sparkling Gulf waters—a quintessential Florida drive.

Stay: Sunseeker Resort Charlotte Harbor

The Sunseeker Resort is not just a hotel—it’s a destination unto itself. Massive in scale yet thoughtfully designed, the resort offers multiple dining venues, expansive pool areas, harbor views, and an unmistakable sense of modern luxury. You could easily spend days here without ever leaving the property.

An afternoon spent exploring the resort and lounging by the pool was pure bliss. Florida sunshine in winter is something special—bright, warm, and endlessly energizing.

That evening’s surf and turf dinner was exceptional. A perfectly cooked cut of beef paired with succulent lobster made for a decadent and satisfying meal. Fine dining with harbor views? Florida living at its best.

Nature & Art- Peace River Botanical & Sculpture Gardens

This beautifully curated garden surprised us at every turn. Tropical plants, thoughtful landscaping, and whimsical sculptures tucked along pathways made it a delight to explore. It’s peaceful, creative, and unexpectedly charming.

Harbor Tour Cruise

An afternoon boat cruise along the harbor offered stunning coastal views. Although we didn’t spot dolphins this time, the calm waters and sunshine made the experience worthwhile. Sometimes it’s simply about being on the water.

Brunch at Beachcomber Trading Post

Colorful, lively, and buzzing with energy, the Beachcomber Trading Post was packed with personality. The vibe was infectious—beachgoers in vibrant attire, laughter, music, and the smell of great food. A tasty burger and fries hit the spot before heading to the beach.

Morning at Englewood Beach

Englewood Beach was alive with activity on this warm winter day. Families, couples, and snowbirds soaked up the sun along the Gulf’s gentle shoreline. It’s popular for a reason—soft sand, calm waters, and a relaxed atmosphere make it ideal for unwinding.

The Drive to Miami – Alligator Alley & The Everglades

The journey from Punta Gorda to Miami took us along Alligator Alley through the Florida Everglades—an iconic stretch of road cutting through vast wetlands. The landscape felt wild and untamed, a dramatic contrast to the polished beach cities awaiting us.

Architectural Wonder – Vizcaya Museum and Gardens

Nothing could have prepared us for Vizcaya’s grandeur. The European-inspired villa, elaborate interiors, and magnificent gardens felt like stepping into another era. It’s one of Miami’s true cultural treasures and a must-visit.

Beach & Pool Time

Sometimes, the best travel moments are the simplest. A short stretch on the beach with hotel-provided chairs, followed by time at the pool, allowed us to soak in South Beach’s energy at our own pace.

Dinner at Otto & Pepe

A popular dining spot with fantastic food and lively atmosphere, Otto & Pepe delivered on all fronts. It was the perfect final dinner—flavorful, energetic, and unmistakably Miami.

Art Deco Magic

The Art Deco walking tour was a fitting finale. Learning why Miami is often called the “Riviera of America” made complete sense as we strolled past pastel-colored buildings, neon signage, and palm-lined avenues. The preserved architecture tells the story of glamour, resilience, and reinvention. It was truly a grande day.
